Ok, I am planning to take a trip to california by train in July, I was planning on buying my train ticket at the train station
Is it cheaper to by in advance or buy on the day your leaving?

You have it backwards. Any discounts you may get are if you purchase the tickets well in advance. Buying at the last minute can be risky because the train may be sold out.

The answers above mine are correct. Amtrak offers discounts for early purchases, with the prices going steadily up the closer you get to your travel date.

Also, you seem to believe that there will be plenty of seats still available on your travel date. Particularly for long-distance trains, they often sell out well in advance. If you wait too long to purchase your ticket, you will likely find yourself shut out.

Secaucus Junction and Penn Station?

When you pay at the Secaucus Park & Ride does that cover both your parking and train fare or do you have to buy a riding ticket separately? Also, does the train between Secaucus & Penn Station usually leave/arrive at the same location in the stations?

When you park at the Secaucus Junction train station and take the train into the city, you will need to purchase a ticket to ride the train. The parking fee only cover the parking at the Junction.

In regards to the trains. They do stop at Secaucus Junction in both direction. Just make sure, when you're in NYC, to look at the departure board for the letter SEC, which stands for Secaucus Junctions.

Things to do near Union Station in Chicago?

My boyfriend and I are traveling to Kansas by Amtrak train next week and we have about a four hour layover in Chicago. What are some things to do near Union Station (my boyfriend doesn't want to travel too far from the station which I understand). I already looked into going to the Skydeck at Willis Tower but tickets are too expensive. Any suggestions?

Don't forget about Amtrak Time. The chances of your train being on time getting into Chicago aren't that great. The outgoing train will leave on time, though. So your four hours could be two. You'll be on the train for at least 6 hours. Eat dinner because the food on the train will be more expensive, and walk around the area.

so i need to change my flight from MCI - DCA to MCI - JFK instead.
also i need to change it difference date.
my ticket class is Economy CLS and fly with United Airlines. i don't know if i could change and not much charge?
so i think right now, if it's cost more expensive to change a date and city i would rater take a bus or train from d.c to nyc instead. is it safe to travel alone? (it is my first time there)

You can't change the destination airport now. You can only change the date. You need to cancel your ticket (about $150), and rebook from MCI to JFK, or you can do MCI to DCA, and then book a flight separately from DCA to JFK. That will probably be $100, so it would be cheaper than canceling the ticket.

On Y!A, you can get suggestions and opinions, but we cannot fix the problem - the airline is the ONLY source for finding out: can you change the cities? can you change the dates? how much will it all cost? are there any seats left on the new flights you want?

Don't putz around asking strangers for help - call United right now. The sooner you call, the sooner you will find out the facts and can deal with it.

A couple of the answers have suggested that you're only able to change dates, and not destinations -- those answers are actually quite wrong. You would need to call United Airlines directly to make the change, and you would be responsible for paying the change fee as well as the difference in fares between the old ticket and the new ticket, but this can be done for a change in cities as well as a change in dates.

As you suspect, though, it will likely be considerably expensive to make these changes to your plane ticket (especially if your travel date is soon, because of the inevitable increases in the cost of the plane ticket), so when you call United, you can ask them how much more it would cost to make both changes (to the date and destination) as it would to just change the date. If just changing the date is considerably cheaper than making both changes, then you can consider taking ground transportation from Washington to New York.

(Though that really should be answered in a separate question, I'd consider taking DC Metro from DCA to Union Station and then taking Amtrak from there to New York Penn Station, if that's what you want to do.)

Hello I'm 22 and I got pulled over the other night a little after 12 a.m. by a georgia state patrol for speeding. He made me get out of the car and stand outside it was already around 30 degress that night I had a short sleeve shirt on my jacket was in the car. I tried to put my hands in my pocket as I was trying to get warm he then proceeds to tell me to get my hands out of my pockets and shined his flashlight in my face and asked if I had anything on me that he should know about which I didn't. I was fully cooperative and told him that my reason for speeding was I was taking my girlfriend home and her curfew was 12:30. He said I was going 68 in a 45 I didn't think that was accurate I know I was speeding but I don't believe I was going that fast when I passed him and realized it was a cop I instinctively looked at my speedometer and it was right below 60. He didn't turn his blue lights on immediately he just pressed his breaks as I passed him I slowed down and kept going. About 2 minutes later I see headlights in my rear view mirrow and then he turned his blue lights on. He just had an attitude the whole time I won't say he was harassing me cause of the car I drive but it just didn't seem necessary to make me stand out in the cold for speeding as he wrote the ticket when I was fully cooperative. This was on a country backroad close to my house. To get back to my original question I called today to see how much the ticket was and it was $348 I was suprised it was so much considering the location I was pulled over in. I just trying to get your opinions if this ticket seems reasonable and why it is that high. The ticket has commited the following offense of SPEEDING. Then it lists clocked by DECATUR/GENESIS 1 G17338 at 68 in a 45. Below that is has offense other than above and has SPEEDING IN EXCESS OF MAXIMUM LIMITS in violation of code section 40-6-181 of state law remarks FA-M. I'm a little worried about this since the job I just started training for requires a clean driving record and the automotive college I start in september requires a clean driving record as well. I called the dmv to find out how many points I have on my license and they said their records are not showing any. The last ticket I got was 3 years ago when I was 19 but according to them its not showing up on their records. Could it be when I turned 21 the points were removed from my license? Sorry for the long read but I wanted to be descriptive as possible and any advice is appreciated.

Answers one and two pretty much covered it, I just want to add that your certified driving history goes back ten years. Citations are only added once you are convicted. I suggest you request a hearing and ask for a reduction if you are that worried about your job.

Points are removed at a rate of 3 per year with no violations in my state. Points are assessed by the DMV depending on the offense committed, not by the court or the officer. The judge can choose to find you guilty of 5 or 10 over to help eliminate points and reduce the fine.

Always keep your hands where an officer can see them. Cops have a dangerous job and they have to assume that everyone they deal with could potentially be dangerous. Also, the cops attitude really doesn't have anything to do with it. Unless he did something that was illegal, don't even mention it if you go to court.

I am looking to complete a Diploma of Tourism, and have found a course through http://www.acq.edu.au

They state that after completion of the course I will receive:

Diploma of Tourism (Travel Consulting and Airline Reservations)
Certification in Computer Reservations Systems
Statement of Attainment from the Certificate III in Tourism (Retail Travel Sales) SIT30207 for 13 units of competency

It also says:
This course is accredited by the ATTRP (Australian Tourism Training Review Panel)
The course covers IATA Fares & Ticketing I & II
The course meets the travel agency licence training requirements in all states and territories of Australia

What I cant work out though, is will I be accredited for a Diploma in Tourism, or a Certificate 3 in Tourism?

We bought train tickets off your site on March 4th, 2010 for 2 people to go to St. Malo to Paris on April 14, 2010 at 12:30 PM with a return ticket from Paris back to St. Malo (with a connection in Rennes) on April 22th at 1 PM, and then we bought another ticket for 1 person to go to St. Malo to Paris (Direct Train) also on April 14, 2010, but with no return. The problem I have is my mother who lives in America bought my tickets for me (I’m traveling through Europe at the moment) and she bought all of them off the French site (but does not speak French) so she used her credit card to buy the tickets, but did not realize we needed the same exact credit card to pick up the tickets at the train station. Since I can’t get the credit card, I was just wondering if it would be possible to cancle our first reservation using my mothers card and switch it with my card that I am traveling with. I want the exact same trains and tickets, so I’m not canceling my order or anything. All I want is to switch the credit card used to pay for the tickets so I’ll be able to actually get my tickets at the train station. I am very sorry to cause this inconvinence.

There is probably no need to send them an email in French, as they all speak English (although they like to pretend otherwise). What they will ask you for though is the booking reference number and possibly the credit card number, so they will be able to reverse the transaction. It would probably be better to give them a call once you have all the details of the booking.

I have translated, and just reworded the letter a little.

I'm not sure, you can cancel the ticket (but wait the answer from the SNCF, they know better)
But maybe, the solution is to change the way to have the ticket. (instead of having the ticket in a french station, SNCF can send you the ticket (at a certain adress)) Could be a (easy) solution.

Anyway
Don't forget in your email, to give your name, email and/or code of your book reservation. (I mean "numéro de dossier/réservation" or "numéro de ticket". to make it possible for the SNCF to find your ticket in their database. Just the date (03.04 & 04.14) & destination are not enough I think)

Otherwise, The SNCF have a english website and you can write to SNCF in english (or german, or dutch, or spanish)

Je suis une étudiante américaine qui voyage actuellement en Europe.
Le problème est que c'est ma mère, qui réside aux Etats-Unis, qui a effectué ses achats de billet pour moi sur internet.
Or nous n'avions pas compris qu'il était nécessaire d'avoir la même carte bancaire qui avait servi à l'achat, pour pouvoir retirer les billets dans une gare en France.
Malheureusement, il m'est impossible d'obtenir la carte de crédit (celle de ma mère) qui a servie à l'achat.

Je me permets donc de vous écrire cet émail, pour savoir comment nous pouvions faire pour obtenir les tickets de train.
Est-il possible de transférer ses tickets sur ma carte de crédit ? Est-il possible d'annuler ces billets et d'en réserver de nouveaux.
Sachant bien que je ne désire pas modifier en aucun cas, les dates de train par exemple.
Je souhaiterais juste trouver une solution avec vous pour récupérer ses billets.

I'm travelling by train to Grimsby tommorow, i'm 15 and wanted to buy the tickets online, Southport has one ticket machine that only uses coins and doesn't allow you to collect prepaid tickets. Can I buy the ticket on the day? If so would it be more expensive? Also, what is the train i should be getting for the change at Manchester Piccadilly?

I'm getting ready to come up and visit nyc for the weekend and I was wondering if there is a pass for the train that i can get for unlimited rides for the weekend and if not how much is the average ticket. thanx in advance

I think you are asking about subway fares when you say unlimited ride "train" fares, and if that is the question, the answer is: Yes. There is a one-day, unlimited ride MetroCard available from the token booth or the MetroCard machines in the subway. They cost $8.50 each, are good from the time of day you first use them in the turnstyle until 3:00 a.m. the following morning. If you are coming to NYC for the weekend, you would need to buy two: One for Saturday, and one for Sunday, a total of $17.00 for unlimited bus and subway rides, excluding express buses, for those 2 weekend days. If you are arriving on Friday evening, you plan to go somewhere on Friday night, and you want to take the subway/bus, it would be best to buy what is called a pay-per-ride MetroCard to cover just the trips you would be taking. The cost of a single ride is $2.25, so if you were going from your hotel to a restaurant then to the theater, then to a pub, then back to your hotel, you would want a pay-per-ride MetroCard valued at the number of times you will be riding the bus or train to get to those destinations. Then, the next day, buy the unlimited ride card.

First of all, Metro-North only operates suburban train service between Grand Central Terminal in NYC and the northern suburbs and Connecticut. If you're staying in the city, you will need to take the subway to get around.

In regards to a unlimited ride card, you're in lucky. There a day pass called the 1-day Fun Pass Unlimited Ride MetroCard, which cost $8.25 a day ($16.50 for 2 cards). The card will give you unlimited travel anywhere in the city on the subway and bus system.

There's no unlimited commuter rail ticket on any of the suburban railroads in the New York area (Metro North, Long Island Railroad, or New Jersey Transit). The only place I know of that has anything like that is Chicago, where Metra commuter rail offers unlimited rides on weekends for $5.

In addition to the day pass Metrocards (good on subways and city buses, but not commuter rail), you might find the MTA's "City Ticket" program useful. This allows you to travel on either Metro North or the Long Island Railroad anywhere within the City of New York (like to the far reaches of Queens and the Bronx) for $3.50. That only works within the city limits, though. In the suburbs you'll pay off-peak fares on weekends, but it can still be up to $15 (one-way), depending on where you're going.
